VICTORIA MONUMENT

Carrickbrennan Graveyard

The society was instrumental in saving the graveyard. In 1985 work started with 15 young men under the supervision of stonemason Mr Fechin Nea. The project was under the umbrella of the Historical Society and AnCo. The work continued until the project was finally brought to a close in August 1986. About 100 trainees had an input into the restoration and research and many secured permanent employment as a result of their association with Carrickbrennan.

In the spring and autumn we open the graveyard - on Carrickbrennan Road - and organise guided walks. This is one of the oldest burial sites in the Dun Laoghaire area. There are famous Generals, Directors of the old Post Office, insurgent leaders from 1798 and memorials to brave men who rescued those in peril from a storm in Dublin Bay, 1861.

Outings

Each year we hold one or more outings to places of historical interest. The summer of 2008, our outing was to Castlecomer and the Discovery Park. We stopped at Killashee Castle for morning coffee, then to Athy for the lunch stop. Castlecomer is a mining area and there is an exhibition centre and crafts shops on the site. We finished with dinner and were home in Dublin around 10.30pm.

Historial Walks

We hold walks around the Dun Laoghaire town area in the summer, in the past there have been guided walks of Patrick Street, Northumberland Avenue and York Road. We also have guided walks, given by Alice Cullen, that take place in the Dalkey and Killiney area during the summer months.

Exhibitions

This Society is active in participating in locally held events during the summer months. We have participated in the Dun Laoghaire Horse Show over the past years, and the Flower Show in The Peoples Park. This year we were involved the Community Day, Visitors Week programme in June, and the Horse Show in August.

We put together a photographic display – following a theme. One year it was Shops and Shopkeepers, old and new in Dun Laoghaire, another year we focused on the harbour. This year it was an eclectic mix of photos of the town including those of the Big Snow of 1982. We get great feedback from people who come to the events, and it boosts our membership.

Research

We encourage all our members to research local history, family history and Irish history. We publish research from our members and also our committee contribute their research in our annual journal.

" MEMORY BANK "

We would like to collect recollections that people in our Society might have about our area, Dun Laoghaire and its environs. We might use snippets in our Journal, but principally we would like to collect as much information on the area from the past up to the present. This information would serve as a Memory Bank for future generations researching and learning about us.
